- Physical Description
- The box is 7 inches by 3.5 inches. It is a wooden box with a gold border about an inch in. In the center it is scrated in 'T.P.' on a piece of metal. Right below where the box opens there is a place for a key. Opening the box, the top has a black background and there is a piece of parchment that says, 'Traveling writing set of Thomas Paine bought from N.? ? in London in the year 1774 and? presented by himself to his friend Mrs. Benj Chew of Philadelphia.' The bottom has 4 compartments. The first is a horizontal box going across the length of the box, which has a cover. Beneath it, there is another box in the center that has a cover and on either side there are compartments that hold ink wells. They both seem to be made from glass, one has a cork and cover and one has a cover with holes in it. Quill is 10.5 inches. They are both reproductions, originals currently on loan to Newseum.
